An impressive large Italian fountain head representing the greek god Neptune made of dark bronze. Neptune is standing on a cliff, holding a sharp spear, fighting against an octopus. The fountain head is signed and stamped on its base from the Fonderia Fond-Art-Lagana Napoli. Wear consistent with age and use. Circa 19th Century, Italy.
Mario Rutelli, an Italian sculptor from Palermo, Italy who was born in 1859 and passed away in 1941. After he finished his studies at the Academia di Belle Arti di Palermo, Rutelli went to study in Rome under the Italian naturalist sculptor and teacher Giulio Monteverde. Later on, Rutelli opened his own company, Giovanni Rutelli’s Firm. One of his masterworks is the Fontana Delle Naiadi in Piazza della Repubblica, Rome.
Neptune the Greek god is the god of freshwater and the sea in the Roman religion. In the Greek-influenced tradition, Neptune is the brother of god Jupiter and Pluto.
