A very impressive and important wellhead, hand sculpted in Istrian marble (Biancone) with Acanthus relief décor. The birds are a symbol of marriage, the crest is dated 1521. Wear consistent with age and use. For centuries, wellheads have been fundamental elements in “Venetian” everyday life. The wellhead was used to catch a supply of fresh water. The catchment basin used to be architectural engineering which was very likely to be developed through the discovery of natural wells, shaping the collection of rain water that was filtered ad cleaned from sand. A similar water well is found in the Campo Della Maddalena, Venice Italy.
